Docs That Rock

Seeing LENNONYC in Central Park

Docsthatrock hit the road last night to spend a summer evening watching Michael Esptein’s wonderful new doc LENNONYC. It was a truly perfect New York evening. Yoko sent video greetings from Iceland and Lou Reed introduced the doc which focuses on Lennon’s years as an expat in NYC. The former Beatle felt a kinship with this immigrant-welcoming city, a place where he could play with random people (the band Elephant’s Memory) and also stroll around the Village unmolested by fans. His love persisted despite his battles with the U.S. government over his resident alien status (also covered in the doc The U.S. versus John Lennon). The film also portrayed John as a house husband, raising Sean. And for the music obsessives, it had never-before heard studio recordings from the Double Fantasy sessions and never-before-seen outtakes from Lennon in concert and home movies. The film premieres nationally on PBS at Monday November 22 at 9 pm. Catch a clip below.
