Docs That Rock

One Night in Vegas One More Time

The unsolved crime of Tupac Shakur’s murder is an outrage and, as a result, a source of endless investigation. Tonight, ESPN’s 30 for 30 sports doc series treads into the music realm with a feature called One Night in Vegas about the evening Tupac got killed, which happened at the Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas (hence, the sports connection.) But watching a preview above (and a few more found on the show page) it seems the film may focus mostly on Tupac. In the director’s notes, Reggie Rock Bythewood draws a parallel between Tyson’s embodiment of hip hop and Tupac as its lyrical representation. I’m curious how it compares with the VH1 project Famous Crime Scene that aired earlier this year and covered the same territory (see the clip below). Our mini doc did the set the scene and include recreations of that horrible evening. But it was mostly a foresnic investigation of his murder. Will be an interesting contrast to see how ESPN contours the night as a larger story about two hip hop icons. Film premieres tonight on ESPN at 8 pm.
