Docs That Rock

He’s Still Here?

The trailer for the anticipated Joaquin Phoenix mockumentary/hoaxamentary/could-it-actually-be-realumentary I’m Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix has been posted. And I can exclusively report about the music aspects of the film since this is a blog about music docs.

  1. Joaquin Phoenix raps a bit throughout – but the film is mostly about his dropping out of the Hollywood machine.
  2. This film will surely be the only time anyone hears these raps (they are that forgettable.)
  3. He has one onstage performance at a hotel which he doesn’t complete (he gets flustered at the audience.)
  4. He does chase Diddy, asking his help in recording some raps and does a track with him in the studio.

So even though a thread of the film is Phoenix pursuing a rap career, I wouldn’t really categorize this as a music film. Not even in a Spinal Tap kind of way. But it has other reasons for being, which you can see when it’s released on September 10.
