Docs That Rock

Darkness To Come Out of Hiding at Toronto

A new documentary about Bruce Springsteen’s 1978 epic album is emerging from the archives. Filmmaker Thom Zimny will release The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, which will premiere September 14 (and open) the Toronto International Film Festival. Zimny used never-before-seen footage of rehearsals and recording sessions shot in 1976-78.

Also among the music docs just announced for Toronto include Mother of Rock: Lillian Roxon about the Australian journalist who chronicled New York City’s punk scene and the goings-on of John and Yoko, the Velvet Underground, Janis Joplin, Dylan, Hendrix and the Doors. One of the first journalists to treat rock seriously, Roxon authored Lillian Roxon’s Rock Encyclopedia, the first important book on rock music.
