Docs That Rock

Music Docs at Upcoming Festivals

I’m a bit behind in posting the music doc highlights from three upcoming and notable film festivals: Full Frame, Tribeca, and Hot Docs. So here is a film-hopping itinerary:

FULL FRAME: Durham, NC, April 8-11

STRANGE POWERS: STEPHIN MERRITT AND THE MAGNETIC FIELDS
Directors: Kerthy Fix and Gail O’Hara
Ten years in the making, Strange Powers is an intimate documentary portrait of songwriter Stephin Merritt and his band The Magnetic Fields. Premiered at South By Southwest. Clip above.

DO IT AGAIN
Director: Robert Patton-Spruill
Producer: Geoff Edgers
Edgers goes in front of camera a la Michael Moore in a quest to find renewed life purpose by reuniting the Kinks. Premiered at the Cleveland Film Festival, where one critic called it a “rock ‘n’ roll fantasy with passion and a wonderful sense of humor.”

GENIUS WITHIN: THE INNER LIFE OF GLENN GOULD:
Directors: Michele Hozer, Peter Raymont
More Glenn Gould! Filmmakers can’t get enough of the Canadian composer.

TRIBECA: NYC, April 21 to May 2

LAST PLAY AT SHEA
Director: Paul Crowder
Billy Joel played some memorable performances at New York’s Shea Stadium, including the final one. This docs looks at Shea’s history for music hosting, from the Beatles to the Who and others.

RUSH: BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE
Directors: Scot McFadyen, Sam Dunn
The storied history of the math rock icons RUSH. I’ve seen this film (it’s really good) and will have a preview posted here before its April 24th U.S. premiere.

HOT DOCS: Toronto, April 29 to May 9

SHADOW PLAY: THE MAKING OF ANTON CORBIJN
Director: Josh Whiteman
Look at notable rock photographer and music video director Anton Corbijn’s career.

THE “SOCALLED” MOVIE
Director: Garry Beitel
Portrait of gay hip hop/funk/klezmer musician, magician, cartoonist, and filmmaker Josh Dolgin, a.k.a. Socalled.

BEYOND IPANEMA
Director: Guto Barra
The influence of Brazilian music from the ones who lived it. Premiered at South By Southwest.

RUSH: BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE
See above for details. But the buzz in Canada is intense. It’s the most popular previewed film at the Hot Docs website.

STRANGE POWERS: STEPHIN MERRITT AND THE MAGNETIC FIELDS

See above.

and two oldies but goodies:
BLANK CITY
Director: Celine Danhier
New wave/nowave scene of NYC in the 1970s. Originally released 2009.

1991 THE YEAR PUNK BROKE
Director: David Markey
Classic punk tribute, a real “you were there” historical moment featuring Sonic Youth, Nirvana and more.
