Docs That Rock

Lou Reed, Documentarian

Lou Reed has composed some of the rock and roll’s most important and influential music. (Full disclosure: I’m a lead advocate of Reed being in the same company as the 20th century greats like Lennon/McCartney, Dylan, Bowie, Springsteen, Page/Plant, Simon, Jagger/Richards, Townshend…jeez, I guess I am a rockist.) But I love how Reed keeps working his artist mojo. There was the tai chi music he wrote for a DVD a few years back. The rerelease and recelebration of his 1973 album Berlin as a documentary. His photography. And now, Reed is directing his own documentary about his elderly cousin.

Per the Guardian and TwentyFourBit, Reed’s short film is a portrait of his 99-year-old cousin nicknamed Red Shirley as she tells stories from her past. Reed wrote music for the film too. It will premiere on May 20 at the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, Switzerland.
