T.A.M.I. Show Blasts from the Past

If you’re an old record and film producer, keep scouring those archives. Because there may be a gem like the T.A.M.I. Show in the stacks.

Today, this five hour star-studded concert film from 1964 (which stands for “Teenage Awards Music International”) was going to be the first in an annual series of concerts. But this was the only one that got made. And check out this booking list: James Brown, the Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, the Beach Boys, Chuck Berry and Smokey Robinson (who just shared a flight with me to LA from South By Southwest.) Quentin Tarantino has dubbed it “in the top three of all rock movies.”

Per those who have seen it, Brown comes across as the most amazing, introducing dance move that have never been replicated. And other backup go-go dancers populate the stage. This new DVD will include the Beach Boys’ legendary performance, which was removed from the original theatrical release of the film. It was one of Brian Wilson’s last performances with the group.
