Docs That Rock

Dear Prudence – Sorry

Always take what you read – or hear – with a grain of skepticism. Especially when it comes to so-called music documentary experts, which I sadly confess I am one (well, was one.) A few days after I joined some pals on a podcast to talk about how music docs get hosed by the Oscars, um, a music doc won in the short documentary category.
Music by Prudence tells the story of a physically deformed Zimbabwean named Prudence Mabhena who find her golden voice after winning a scholarship and joining the school choir. There is no trailer online yet but oddly Last Call with Carson Daly did a feature story about the film which you can see above. Some songs from Prudence are here. Short docs are even tougher to view in today’s tough theatrical environment than regular docs and foreign flicks, but you can catch the 32 minute film on HBO this May 12. Go music docs!
P.S. For the bizarre Kanye-like speech interruption, get more news here.
