Docs That Rock

Listmania: Mojo’s Top 20 Rock Docs

Vodpod videos no longer available.
I’m trying to not overpost everyone’s list of top Rock Docs or else that’s all this blog would cover. But when venerable UK mag Mojo provides their take on the all-time music docs, it’s worth a story.

Of course, like Paste’s list covered earlier and scores of others, Dylan’s Don’t Look Back tops the list…and most of the top ones are pretty similar to other lists (including this Flaming Lips Fearless Freaks doc (see trailer.) But here goes (and don’t forget to see the full list at Mojo’s site since all trailers are attached.)

  1. Don’t Look Back
  2. Dig
  3. The Last Waltz
  4. Gimme Shelter
  5. No Direction Home
  6. Fearless Freaks
  7. The Future is Unwritten
  8. The Devil and Daniel Johnston
  9. The Beatles Anthology
  10. End of the Century (The Ramones)
  11. Buena Vista Social Club
  12. The Beatles in America
  13. Some Kind of Monster
  14. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart
  15. Standing in the Shadows of Motown
  16. Decline of Western Civilization: The Metal Years
  17. The Filth and the Fury (Sex Pistols)
  18. Heavy Metal Parking Lot
  19. Meeting People is Easy (Radiohead)
  20. The Kids Are Alright

What do you think of the list? Post comments!

  1. Imagine, the John Lennon documentary, should definitely be on the list. Also Monterey Pop.

  2. Nice to see The Last Waltz getting big props – sometimes seems that one’s been forgotten. (I’d rank it with Stop Making Sense – and where’s that?! – as the top concert films.) Ditto Heavy Metal Parking Lot – big ups to my buddy Jeff Krulik.
