Docs That Rock

Invite the White Stripes Home

The inestimable Pop Candy blog writes today about the White Stripes effort to get their new documentary seen. That’s because theatrical releases for most docs are going the way of the dinosaur – few independent theaters, little marketing budgets. While the Stripes does has fairly decent distribution (see a list of small theaters nationwide showing the doc this month here), they have some other cool ideas.
Along with the doc showing at the upcoming South By Southwest Festival, the band is asking fans to host their own screening parties on March 16 when the film is released on DVD. Official “screening kits” cost $30 and are available on the movie’s website and if a person orders before March 10, they’ll get the film a day early, PLUS popcorn and peppermint swirl candy (naturally). The band is offering as yet unannounced prizes for the most creative screenings; fans have to send in photos of their event.
For the truly devoted, fans can buy a limited edition box set for $229 which includes the DVD, a live DVD of the band’s 10th anniversary show, a live double CD, an exclusive 7-inch, hardcover book and silk-screened print.
