Mark All Calendars: Doors Film in Select Theaters April 9

First the news: When You’re Strange, the first proper documentary about the Doors will be in theaters April 9 in eight select cities (the obvious ones plus Seattle, Dallas, Philly and Atlanta.) If the audience shows, the film will get wider play elsewhere.
There is a lot I’m going to write about this film closer to its premiere. The quick backstory: it debuted at Sundance in 2009 to mostly poor reviews and the film was pulled from a planned showing at South By Southwest. Retooled and now with new narration from Johnny Depp, it’s finally being released cinematically and will also air on PBS in May.
I saw the retooled version at a screening a few months back and was more or less blown away. Both in its depth of stolen moments from the 1960s as well as its novel and provocative storytelling, this film is one of the freshest music docs I’ve seen in a long time. Check out the attached trailer and save space in your early April weekend planning to see this. And watch this blog in March for more skinny about the making and remaking of the film.
