Docs That Rock

Irish Music (a month before St. Paddy’s Day)

Many docs about places or scenes fall short. Instead of illuminating the special sauce that helps define a regional or local movement, many end up being loosely tied lists of acts that just happened to have come from the same place. So here’s hope that a new doc Music of Ireland – Welcome Home doesn’t get stuck in the rut.

Airing first tonight on New York public television station WLIW and then going the local public TV route, the doc features interviews and performances from U2, Bob Geldof, Pete Seeger, Sinead O’Connor and the Chieftans among others. Tourism Ireland helps fund the doc.
“For such a small country to produce such amazing talent and the way their music defines the people is just extraordinary,” executive Producer Denny Young told Billboard. “It has fascinated me for most of my life and is something I wanted more people to be in tune with.”
