Docs That Rock

P-Star’s Quest

Even though there’s a boulevard of broken dreams for most aspiring musicians, there is always a lottery ticket chance. One keen film that depicts the path to glory is P-Star Rising, which debuted at Tribeca last year and now premieres on the PBS doc series Independent Lens tonight at 10 pm. P-Star began rapping at age 7, attempting to become a child star then a bona fide one. While she’s now 15, the film traces her career between the ages of 9 and 13, raised and managed by her father Jesse Diaz, a former rapper himself. P-Star’s circumstances are about as opposite as the apple-faced hopeful on American Idol each week as she lives in near poverty, but her family’s fortunes are tied to the hope that she breaks big. Maybe this doc could help, which is appropriately tied to a soundtrack and new video.
