Docs That Rock

Still Bill Withers

“You know how unhappy you would be if you felt that the way you are is not OK. I started out my life like that, I don’t want to end it like that.”

There is some deep stuff going on inside the mind of songwriting legend Bill Withers. Until last August when he appeared at the Brooklyn benefit in his honor featured in the clip above (that’s his daughter singing Just the Two of Us) he hadn’t performed publicly in 25 years. He hasn’t released in an album in 20 years. But he’s responsible for some of the most sublime soul-fused pop music with such hits like Lean on Me, Ain’t No Sunshine and Use Me.

A new doc will premiere at South By Southwest called Still Bill which is an intimate portrait about the man behind the songs. There is a seven minute trailer online at the site (which I’ll post if the filmmakers give permission.) From always being curious about what happened to Bill Withers to hearing his words, it seems like the film could be a pretty intense psychological exploration of why a man so talented found it necessary to step out the public spotlight. I’m seeing this for sure in Texas.
